Switching Guide

Background

Since the deregulation of the energy market in 1999, domestic users can choose which company they wish to supply them. It is as simple as getting supplied by Provider X rather than Provider Y.

So what changes? Well not a lot, there is no change to your supply, pipes, cables, if your supply is ever interrupted then you still call your local supplier, it is the same infastructure, it is usually even the same company that read the meters. The difference is the colour of the bill and the price they charge you.

What to expect

By changing suppliers you can save varying amounts of money, it takes approximately 4-6 weeks to change supplier and you generally hear within 7-10 working days from your new supplier who will advise you what to do next and when. Usually this is just a meter reading on a specified date.

PES Areas

PES stands for Public Electricity Suppliers

The UK is divided into areas that the PES's supply, this map reflects the PES Areas in the UK and is a useful reference to check if you are with your local supplier (not the most cost effective), or to lookup who your local supplier would be.

Gas is different as British Gas used to supply the whole of the UK network - so your local gas supplier would be them.
